Red Sox ReactionReturn to index of stories... |
Free pizza and soda proved ineffective at keeping University of New Hampshire students from mobbing downtown Durham last night after the Red Sox loss to the Yankees. About 2500 people flooded into downtown Durham late last night following the Red Sox loss to the Yankees. Nine people were arrested, six of them UNH students. All faced felony riot charges. Authorities closed Main Street and used pepper spray to disperse the crowd. Officials say people on the street and from rooftops were throwing bottles and rocks at police. Others fired paintball guns at police. Fires were set in dumpters including one beside a new dorm and another beside a restaurant that had just reopened after a serious fire. There were no serious injuries. The university had set up pizzas and soft drinks for students for a celebration in a campus courtyard, but observers said the students took the pizzas and surged downtown. |

Benson PollReturn to index of stories... |
Governor Benson's approval rating is up again - that's according to a recent poll conducted by the UNH Survey Center. - 58 percent of New Hampshire adults say they approve of the job he has done as governor. 26 percent disapprove. James - It doesn't seem as though the debate over the state budget has hurt the Governor's image. This is the third straigt gain for the Gov in approval ratings The poll also asked - "Do you think things in New Hampshire are generally going in the right direction or are they seriously off on the wrong track?" Sixty seven percent thing things in New hampshire are generally going in the right direction, 26 percent thing things are seriously off on the wrong track. Edith or Guy - Is this suprising either of you considering the tough economic times we've been facing in New Hampshire? |

Word this week that several newspapers were duped into printing what they thought were letters home from soldiers' serving in Iraq. The letters described the rebuilt infrastracuture in Kirkuk, and Iraqi children saying "thank you mister" as they greet the American soldier. Gannet News Service discovered that the form letter was a fake - one soldier said his sargeant had handed out the letters to the squad - another said he was led to belive that the letter was a press release.Guy, how does this happen? |

Anglican leaders are warning that their worldwide communion of churches will be "put in jeopardy" if New Hampshire goes ahead with plans to consecrate an openly gay bishop next month. Despite the crisis, Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams is urging church officials not to act rashly if the bishop is consecrated. Anyone surprised that the election of Rev. Gene Robinson has caused such an upheaval in the Anglican church? AP-NY-10-16-03 1333EDT |
